My trip to the Half Price bookstore

Ok.. after Christmas Sales are wonderful.. usually Im not a shopper, I go where something is that I need, get it, get out.  But yesterday I wandered around The Half Price Bookstore for 3 hours.  WOW.. incredible for me..

well they were having a sale... several carts of books for $1 per book .. YEP $1..  now thats my idea of a bargain, if there is something in the cart of interest.  Here is what I found.

SOAR WITH YOUR STRENGTHS.. by Donald O. Clifton and Paula Nelson.  I started it last night and I like it.

ATTITUDE is EVERYTHING..  by Keith D Harrell..  the intro sounds great.

SOARING ON YOUR STRENGTHS.. by Robin Ryan.  I want to really SOAR cause I have two views of how to. ;)

then I bought some casual reading stuff.. you know.. Open House material.. pickup putdown in slowtimes

IRISH LINEN by Andrew Greeley

BEST FRIENDS by Martha Moody

CITIZEN GIRL by Emma McLaughin & Nicole Krause (authors of THE NANNY DIARIES)

FINDING HOME .. 3 short stories by Linda Howard, Elizabeth Loweel and Kasey Michaels

BELOVED by Toni Morrison

IF IT AIN'T ONE THING.. by Cheryl Robinson

Cranberry Queen  by Kathleen DeMarco

2 selections from the Oprahs BookClub

OPEN HOUSE by Elizabeth Berg

THE PILOT'S WIFE by Anita Shreve

then I bought 2 not on the $1 cart, I like this author, Lisa Scottoline, murder with a twist usually, some funny tongue in cheek..  I brought home..  DEAD RINGER and FINAL APPEAL.

I'm unsure which I will read first but this is my whole years worth of reading I think.  Who knows, it could be my next years too... :)

What is on your reading list this year?

XBOX 360 & Christmas Disappointment

While Christmas is the most anticipated day of the year for many children occassionally it can become the biggest disappointment in a childs life.

This year my 12 year old grandson was desperate to get an XBOX 360, its all he talked about for weeks and weeks, it was the only gift he wanted.  At over $350 it would be his only gift.

On Christmas Day the excitement was running high, please can we open our gifts now was heard every 3 minutes, his Dad had to feed the animals, shower, get dressed and no telling what else but Nick was getting impatient, I think he gets that from me, we kept hearing.. NOW MOM?   WHAT IS DAD DOING?  NOW MOM?

Finally the big moment..  Dad was ready, Mom was ready, of course all 3 boys were dancing around with excitement, Dad donned his Santa hat, his yearly tradition, and handed out gifts, Nick could barely breathe he was so ready to see if indeed he got his one wish.. the XBOX 360.

Oh wait .. under that wrapping paper was a cardboard box that said from Aunt Yvonne in Wyoming?  what?  opening the box.. OH MY GOSH, there it is hiding in a used cardboard box the brand new XBOX 360..  SMILES, laughter .. PURE JOY in his face!!

Fast forward an hour, presents all unwrapped, yes Bryce got his scooter he wanted, Matt got the Mindstorm science project he wanted, we hear over and over from an excited Nick,  CAN WE PLAY THE XBOX??  NOW DAD?   PLEASE??

Being the great Dad he is... he hooks it up and Nick is in a 12 yr old bliss...he allows his 10 yr old brother Matt to play with him. Around 2pm his best friend, Will calls, can you  come over?  My mom will come pick you up?  So Will his brother and his mom come over... And Will tells us that he too got an XBOX 360.. but it only worked about 1 hour and froze up. From the look on moms face I'm not sure who was more disappointed Will or his mom? . .Mom planned and prepared to buy this for Will.  She was very disappointed for her son Will.

My daughter and soninlaw tell Wills mom, "we have heard alot about the XBOX 360 being unstable and having alot of returns.  One friend said he returned 4 before he got one that works properly."

Nick and Matt go home with Will and his mom, taking the XBOX with them, since the big feature is how easy it plugs and plays and its suppose to be portable.  Now at Wills house and all settled in to play several hours of games best friends sharing a good time, this was about 5PM, then at 7PM  Nicks XBOX 360 FREEZES up.  Devastated the boys get to argueing .. who broke it.. was it someones fault? Alas, best friends almost in a fight.  Wills mom soothed and diverted the boys.

Today, with ruffled feathers smoothed down, the boys friends again, we take the XBOX 360 back to the store, no questions asked, the store replaced it.  There is almost a pallet of returned ones sitting there.  WHAT on earth is MICROSOFT THINKING?  to sell disappointment to so many children.. I'm almost outraged that a corporation would be so money grubbing they would break childrens hearts with such an inferior product.. Keep it in the factory and get the dang thing stablized before selling them.  In our experience, 2 boys, 2 XBOX 360 and 2 factory rejects... If I did my job so poorly I would never work again I'm sure.

While I commend the replacement it shouldn't have had to happen.  Where is pride in workmanship? Are there really so many replaced that its just to be expected?  No big deal?  Well it is a big deal.. it was Christmas, the boys had a major fight and disappointment raged, best friends in a rife? ...  that is a big deal.  Microsoft should be ashamed of their corporate self.

I hereby award Microsoft Corporation the FRYING PAN AWARD of CHRISTMAS 2007

CLUNK!!

Year End Clean-Up to Start a Great 08

End of the year..  for some 2007 was turbulent, up down, down, hoping for up..   for some it was their best year ever... For all of us its almost time to ring in the New Year and we all hope for a GREAT 08..

Is your desk a pile of papers? Ever wonder where that particular piece of paper you know you wrote that phone number on is hiding? Now is the time to organize.. and while doing so you can get ahead start on the IRS guys.

Just after Christmas many of us will have a bit of a lag-time..  we can be especially productive for our business this week.. Sort, toss out..  Clean off that desk.  Make a plan, learn to time block. Project goals. Budgets.

Schedule a consistent time each day for opening both mail delivered by the post office and email.  Time blocking is a wonderful way to complete this task. Responding immediately whenever possible will free up time at the end of the day... viola.. its already done.

File, often and consistently put things away as you take them out.. make your own system, I file closed files in one area and open files in another area and how-tos in another area and weekly or monthly market stats in another area.. many times those stats have been great tools to show a buyer or seller where our market has been and what is happening now.  The important thing is use a system that makes sense to you.

Use a journal or day planner to do an overview of your week, then TO DO lists for daily tasks.. I find when I do a daily TO DO list, starting from my planner my day goes much smoother, of course always leave room and expect changes, flexibility is the key when you need to run out and meet a new client.

Cultivate new habits to make it truly a GREAT 08!!!  HAPPY SELLING ACTIVE RAINERS.

May your year be GOLDEN.

If you would like to buy or sell Real Estate in the AUSTIN TEXAS area call or email me, I will treat you like family!  Customer service is not a lost art here!!   Gail Tassey   gailnttexa@gmail.com or 512-217-9482

candied walnuts recipe needed

Candied Walnuts

Does anyone have a simple fast easy to make recipe for these delicious tidbits?  I remember when I was a child that my Aunite Alma always made these wonderful little bites at Christmas,

We would help pickup the nuts around Thanksgiving time ,, shell them and in a couple of weeks Aunite would bring up a tray of these sweet treats.  I always meant to get the recipe but time passed and I never got around to it, then of course Auntie passed and I lost the opportunity.

The Active Rain community is so helpful in so many ways I thought perhaps someone had a favorite candied walnut recipe they would like to share... PLEASE?   Thanks so much ARers.

One day in the life of AUSTIN TEXAS real estate

Tonight I was just wondering how many real estate transactions were dealt with in our system today... here is what I found out.

The Austin Texas Board of Realtors used the MLXchange system, we switched over to it from Tempo in late Novermber of this year.  Some folks are still struggling with the new system and some took to it like a duck takes to water.

Overall here is what happened in our MLsytem today, Dec 14, 2007..  and to quote a great person,Mr Walter Cronkite  "thats the way it is"

NEW LISTINGS      82,  from a $77,900 condo with 727 sq ft to $2,795,000 house with 7,120 sq ft.

PRICE CHANGES..  64..   17 went up and 47 went down in dollar values.

BACK ON MARKET  11    for various and sundry reasons.. not specified

ACTIVE CONTINGENT  3   also various and sundry reasons

PENDING    63..  under an executed contract   (this is good :)   )

SOLD        80   closed sales,  very very good

WITHDRAWN  35  various and sundry reasons,   not specified

EXPIRED         24  various and sundry reasons,  not specified

TEMPORARILY OFF THE MARKET    8   we can guess?  or not :)

so this is how our  MLSYSTEM  looked today, how was yours looking?
